This week, Donald Trump is expected to sign executive orders blocking refugees from seeking safety and restricting immigration from Muslim countries—the beginnings of a Muslim ban.
While the Trump administration has backpedaled on his call for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States"—realizing the weakness of his mandate and the unpopularity of his policies—it's clear that these orders are driven by a deep-seated, almost maniacal anti-Muslim hate that has captured Trump and his cabinet.
And his call to block Syrian refugees—some of the most vulnerable people in the world—is shockingly morally bankrupt, even for someone like Trump.
We reject targeting of anyone based on their religion or where they come from, and call on members of Congress to go on the record and vocally reject Trump's Muslim ban.
Trump has once again shown us his true values: he opens his arms and his administration to white supremacists, Goldman Sachs bankers, oil tycoons, and the “alt-right,” but wants to deny safe harbor to people fleeing Daesh and one of the worst civil wars in the world.
While this country hasn't often lived up to the ideals of openness and tolerance, those of us who strive for a better society have always sought to create an America that welcomes all, regardless of their religion or where they come from.
By shutting the doors on refugees and beginning his Muslim ban, Trump has resoundingly rejected these values.
Now it's up to us—Muslims and all people of good conscience—to resoundingly reject Trump and his Muslim ban.
