The Message

ShotSpotter is maybe the most dangerous surveillance tech corporation you’ve never heard of. Their audio surveillance has quietly been installed in more than 100 U.S. cities — embedding police surveillance in our neighborhoods.

ShotSpotter routinely creates dangerous situations by sending police alerts of gunfire that never took place and dispatching armed police into predominantly Black and brown neighborhoods.

Independent research shows that ShotSpotter does not prevent gun violence or make us safer. Our cities must refuse new contracts with ShotSpotter and all audio surveillance companies — and close those contracts if they already exist.

ShotSpotter audio surveillance does not make our communities safer. People have been shot, incarcerated, and killed by police in the aftermath of a ShotSpotter alert.

The millions being spent on ShotSpotter audio surveillance — a faulty, police tech tool that brings police into Black and brown neighborhoods in a heightened state of emergency — should be redirected toward solutions that keep us safe.

We need healthcare, affordable housing, access to well-paying jobs, and the ability to raise our children without fear of violence. Our communities don’t need more surveillance.
